Ladies & Gentlemen,
It's a fact that personal care and beauty products are very harmful for our environment. Razors, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, hair spray, hair gel, hand sanitizers, hand soap, mascara tubes, cotton balls for removing makeup & nail polish, add up over time.
Are these items really necessities? Or can we learn to live without & economize?
Many people have taken the leap to simplify their lives so much so that they only buy what they need & products that contain quality ingredients. Some terms you may hear are: "zero waste", "going green", "organic" and "sustainable beauty".
More & more people are loving shopping locally at farmer's markets for a variety of items like homemade soaps, beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap & more! On Etsy, we find a huge array of craftsmen that use earth friendly materials. In this post, I'm going to share some ideas & top favorite products that you'll love!
1) Safety Razors
You may want to try investing in a safety razor. They will last for years and to replace the blades are less money than buying a pack of disposable razors. Thankfully we have YouTube to show us how to safely use these not-so-old-fashioned gems of the past. Amazon has some excellent choices, here's an example for a quick reference:
2) Use Natural Bar Soap
Not only excellent for the bathroom & kitchen, but try using it to shave instead of shaving cream. Some even like to use it as shampoo and use coconut oil afterward as a conditioner. Simple, eco friendly and you've just saved a small fortune!
3) Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Ah, one can't go wrong with coconut oil. Toss the mouthwash, toothpaste, conditioners & lotions, makeup wipes, eye-makeup removers and try switching to 1 product as a replacement for them all! The internet is full of ideas on how to use coconut oil, and no doubt you're familiar with how versatile it is. Something that I've been LOVING lately are coconut oil pulling chews. I've been doing this for the past two weeks at least 4 times a week every morning and now it's a staple part of my oral healthcare routine. Try it for yourself! 4) Essential Oils
Essential oils & plant-based extracts have successfully been used for hundreds of years. Before the commercial world of doctors became a trend, home remedies were known for their reliability & were affordable, if not free. But really, they are an "essential" for anyone looking to economize & use less chemicals. Now that it's cold & flu season, On Guard is my constant companion, using it as hand sanitizer, immune system health, a multi-purpose cleaning product and in my diffuser around the house. Not to mention putting peppermint or spearmint in oil pulling chews mentioned above which replaces using mouthwash & toothpaste. The fact is, they work amazingly well & something you should try if you haven't already. Here's a link to quickly find the products mentioned and feel free to message me with questions:
3) Zero Waste Makeup/Skincare
This one I'm very excited about! Have you heard of it? It's not the same as buying "natural" makeup. Zero waste beauty, involves products that are eco-friendly, vegan, free from nasty chemicals, and recycled. The ingredients are 100% top grade. So far I've found a few brands on Etsy that you may want to try, and as always the brand 100% Pure is at the top on my list. Simply type "zero waste beauty" on Etsy and you're good to go.
Most women who go zero waste, use the bare minimal items. Mascara, lip rouge, brows and a little shimmer with very little use of brushes are the norm. My favorite aspect of this concept is using cacao powder as a way to do your brows and bronzer! Say goodbye to Too Faced Cosmetic's over priced chemical filled chocolate palettes & chocolate bronzer! A fun way to economize, so why not try it!
As a Freelance Makeup Artist, sadly, I create a lot of waste because of hygiene & sanitization reasons. Sometimes it can't be helped using certain products. Humans will never be able to fix or reverse the affects of the damage done to the earth. But those little choices do add up and its our responsibility as humans to take care of the precious environment we live in & show respect to our creator by how we take care of it.
